The ITE examination for requalifying candidates will be March 6, 2010. A physician may reestablish his or her admission qualifications either by taking and receiving a passing score on the examination administered by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Joint Council on In-Training Examinations OR by satisfactorily completing a 12-month term of additional clinical training in anesthesia as a CA-3 year resident in an ACGME-accredited program.
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) has established a scaled score of 32 for the 2010 requalification standard. If you received a passing score and wish to take the ABA Part 1 exam in August 2010, you will need to contact the Credentials Department at the ABA office immediately upon receiving your scores. The deadline for submitting a completed application to the ABA for the August 2010 Part 1 exam is June 1, 2010.

About In-Training
The Joint Council is responsible for the preparation and administration of the yearly In-Training Examination to more than 5,000 residents in anesthesiology training programs in the United States and Canada. The In-Training Examination provides an evaluation of each resident's knowledge and skill during the training period in anesthesiology, and allows the resident's supervising physician to tailor future training in specific areas in which the resident needs additional assistance before completing the residency and applying for Board certification.
Requalifying Candidates
Physicians who have unsuccessfully completed the ABA certification process on two application cycles or have been out of residency for at least 12 years prior to the ABA application cycle are eligible to take the In-Training Examination to requalify into the ABA certification process. Physicians may also complete an additional year of residency training in order to become Board-eligible again. To take the requalification examination, please contact the ASA office at (847) 268-9126. Applications are available by August 15th of the examination year. To requalify through an additional year of residency training, please contact each institution individually for requirements.
If you are unsure whether you are eligible to apply for ABA certification, please contact the American Board of Anesthesiology at (919) 881-2570 and they will be able to assist you.
